I WAS TRAPPED ON A ROLLER COASTER with a yellow-eyed witch and an unkind stranger was taking potshots at us from the Playland midway far below.

The self-proclaimed demon lady was stabbing at my chest, cursing loudly as I twisted left and right in the wind to avoid the knife she wielded.

I had first visited Playland Amusement Park in Bitter Lake with another busty redhead back in 1931. I’d married that redhead and it had ended badly all right, but not as badly an end as this knife-wielding had in mind.

My name’s Franco Devlin. Friends and enemies alike call me Devlin. My Spanish mother called me Querida. Women from both coasts have choice names for me that I won’t discuss just now.

What the hell had happened? In the middle of a promising midnight adventure her eyes had gone from emerald green to black cat yellow, and she had launched into her attack quicker than Johnny Weissmuller wrestling an alligator angling to eat Jane for lunch.
